RUKH, MAGIC, AND MAGICIANS

RUKH

Known as the world's Great Flow, Rukh is the energy of the world. Natural phenomena and each and everyone's destiny is guided by the Rukh. It is also known as the home of the souls. When a human dies, his body stays on earth, but his soul goes back to the Rukh. Rukh appear as small, white, glowing birds to those who can see them. Non-magicians cannot see Rukh. There are eight types of Rukh that influence nature. This will be discussed later on.

MAGOI

Magoi is one's life energy. It is energy from the Rukh. In other parts of the world, it is known as Ki. Everyone has Magoi in them. As an example, warriors in the Laem Empire know how to manipulate their Magoi to amplify their attacks and stop their opponents from using their own Magoi techniques. For the video game-savvy, think of it as your MP. Easy concept, right? But use too much of your Magoi and you might collapse from exhaustion, or worse - die.

MAGICIANS
So what is magic, and what are magicians? The legendary Yamuraiha explains it better than we do:
"Magic is the transformation of Magoi into other substances. It can be fire or water or thunder. Normal people ... will not be able to do the transformation. However, there are some who can transform their Magoi without any tools. They can converse with the Rukh from birth and give special orders to the Rukh, leading to the occurrence to many different kinds of natural phenomena. They’re living communicators who are closest to the world’s Great Flow... and that’s us, the Magicians!"

In addition, there are three ranks of magicians in the world. The lowest rank is that of witch doctors and fortune tellers who can see the Rukh, but are unable to do anything significant. The next rank is that of the sorcerers. They can also see the Rukh and they have great amounts of Magoi in their bodies. These make up the bulk of the magicians you can find in Magnoshutatt. For reasons unknown, everyone who arrives in Magnoshutatt through the dungeon gate is a magician. The final and highest rank is that of the Magi, who can borrow the Rukh from their surroundings to cast magic. There are only three Magi in the world at any given time, and they only appear at the turning points of history, or so they say. In-game, these Magi are only rumored to exist - no one has ever seen one alive.

Although Magicians may converse with the Rukh, they are unable to completely put the Rukh under their control. They should not be thought of as masters of the Rukh but, as mentioned earlier, communicators.

I have a great amount of magoi like a magician, but I suck at magic! It hurts when I use magic, too. Why is this?
Don't worry about this. With enough training at Magnoshutatt Academy, you can remove this limit!

RUKH TYPES

There are 8 types of Rukh and they control the following magic - Heat, Water, Light, Lightning, Wind, Sound, Strength, Life. Magicians can have an affinity to any single type of Rukh and they are categorized by color. For example, a magician with an affinity for Rukh that can manipulate fire is called a Red Magician. A magician's type affinity can be determined by the color and power their Rukh give off when they put their Magoi in the Eight Color Magic Sorting Crystal on their very first classroom maref.

Heat Magic (First Type, Red Magician)
Caused by Rukh that manipulates flames. This magic is straightforward - anything that has to do with heat or fire is of this type. Crystal shoots a blast of fire from its mouth. After this type, Red Magicians can also master this type's extreme opposite, wind magic.
Water Magic (Second Type, Blue Magician)
Caused by Rukh that manipulates water. This magic is straightforward - anything that has to do with water is of this type. This Crystal shoots water from its mouth. After this type, Blue Magicians can also master this type's extreme opposite, sound magic.
Light Magic (Third Type, Orange Magician)
Caused by Rukh that manipulates light. Light magic can be used to distract opponents, create illusions and hide objects from view, among other things. In canon, light bending magic is used to make people appear as different characters. Crystal gives off a strong flash of light from its eyes. After this type, Magicians can also master this type's extreme opposite, strength magic.
Lightning Magic (Fourth Type, Yellow Magician)
Caused by Rukh that manipulates lightning. This magic is straightforward - anything that has to do with static and lightning is of this type. Crystal zaps the magician with electricity. After this type, Yellow Magicians can also master this type's extreme opposite, life magic.
Wind Magic (Fifth Type, White Magician)
Caused by Rukh that manipulates wind. This magic is straightforward - anything that has to do with air and wind is of this type. Crystal blows a gust of wind from its mouth. After this type, White Magicians can also master this type's extreme opposite, heat magic.
Sound Magic (Sixth Type, Green Magician)
Caused by Rukh that manipulates sound. Sound magic has various uses. It can be used to charm, to inflict damage and to lull people to sleep, to name a few. Crystal sings a note with a female voice upon contact. After this type, Green Magicians can also master this type's extreme opposite, water magic.
Strength Magic (Seventh Type, Indigo Magician)
Caused by Rukh that manipulates strength. Anything that has to do with force is of this type. Crystal pushes magician back upon contact. After this type, Magicians can also master this type's extreme opposite, light magic.
Life Magic (Eighth Type, Purple Magician)
Caused by Rukh that manipulates life. Anything that has to do with life - be it plants, animals, bacteria or fungi - is of this type. Crystal's sculpted hair turns into plants that wrap around the magician's hand. After this type, Purple Magicians can also master this type's extreme opposite, lightning magic.

Type affinities do not restrict one's access to magic types. In fact, mastering more types actually increases your magoi conductivity. A Red Magician may learn water magic, but it is not recommended for his early studies because of his low compatibility with it.

It is possible to combine types of magic! This is called composite magic. Various combinations of magic types give rise to more complicated magic such as ice magic, healing magic, clairvoyance magic and gravity magic. For example, Aladdin's Sharrl Raaki combines Heat and Water magic, creating steam. You can combine up to all eight types of magic, and there are countless combinations of magic you can make. Go wild with your imagination! But remember, it isn't recommended for a 6th kodor student to use type combinations early on in his studies.

While we're on the topic of advanced magic, aberrant magic is another notable topic. While magic normally creates naturally-occurring phenomena such as fire, water and wind, aberrant magic causes rare phenomena like tsunamis and earthquakes. Aberrant magic forces Rukh to cause calamities and tear the world apart! It's a very dangerous magic that only high level magicians can do.

SPELLS

There are many spells in the world of Magi and their names are usually corruptions of Arabic phrases. For example, heat spells usually start with halharl while water spells usually start with sharrl. However, the language of a spell doesn't matter since a spell is but an aid. All you need to do to use magic is listen to the Rukh!

The most basic of spells is Bolg, which surrounds the user in a barrier created by their Magoi. Although it is a very strong shield, it is not impossible to break. Every magician can cast this spell. It's the first you learn! No words need to be uttered to activate it.

The higher the level of magic, the more orders of formula it requires. By order, we mean an order a magician gives to the Rukh. For example, Titus' Sharrl Halharl Zorf, which is an aberrant magic spell, requires 180 orders of formula to be realized. There isn't any canon explanation more than this, but keep this in mind when creating your character's arsenal of spells. No matter how much Magoi you have, you can't cast more powerful magic if you don't train and study!
