FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS.

BASICS

what is the premise of the game?
Rukh Gate is a panfandom fantasy school jamjar game based on Shinobu Ohtaka's Magi: the Labyrinth of Magic. The game itself is set in the country of Magnoshutatt. Upon arrival through a dungeon gate, characters are immediately enrolled in Magnoshutatt Academy to hone their innate talents as magicians. More about the premise can be found here.

communities?
The game makes use of four communities:
  • [community profile] rukhgate - The main community. This is where open action posts go.
  • [community profile] rukhlogs - The log community. This is where closed logs and event logs go.
  • [community profile] rukhooc - The OOC community.
  • [community profile] mangoshit - The meme community.

In addition, players must make a public post in their character journals that will serve as their character's IC inbox. Threads in IC inboxes may be used for activity checks.

There is no network in the game, but there are many ways to overcome this. You may use the campus bulletin board or, if your character isn't a stickler for rules, write on the classroom desks!

What is the pace of the game?

It is a 1:1 ratio. One day in real life is one day in game.

what happens after the events in the premise?
Well, first, your character will want to know how the lady reached the conclusion that they themselves were magicians. She will say that your character is obviously loved by the rukh - the glowing birds they saw earlier. If your character points out that they weren't able to see such things earlier, she will look concerned for a moment, then smile and say that they've been blessed. She will give a brief explanation on the Rukh, the dungeon they came out of, and how they don't know how to send you back. After that, they will inform your character about the country of Magnoshutatt and Magnoshutatt Academy.

The magician will offer to help your character enroll or give them instructions on how to go through the process. If your character cooperates, she will guide them with a smile and wave goodbye once they reach the examination area. If your character is extremely difficult, they won't have a choice - the magician will wave her staff, utter a spell, and make your character float up in the air! She will bring the character with her until she enrolls them and drops them off at the examination area. This is the area where they will be sorted into their appropriate level of ability, or "kodor". All characters start out as 6th kodors.

Please look at the Magnoshutatt, Academy & School Life, Dungeon and Rukh, Magic and Magicians pages for more info! It is recommended that you read the School Life page first so that you will have a better idea of what your character will be doing.

IN-GAME INFO

Will my character be able to keep their original powers and form?
All characters are powered down upon arrival. Physically, everyone will be limited to that of a normal human being. To compensate for this, all characters will be given magic. With practice, characters can regain some of their powers through magic and physical training. Characters with magical powers in canon will retain the ability to use magic, but they will be powered down to a basic level. See the Rukh, Magic and Magicians page for more info on how magic in the game works.

All characters will retain their original forms. Robots, ponies, aliens, and cat girls will be able to keep their physical form along with nuances. A nine-tailed fox can hide its tails if it was able to in canon and vampires will still be weak to sunlight. Immortal characters, however, can die. It's okay. All characters regenerate at the dungeon gate after a while.

Characters dead in canon will be brought back to life. Characters who are ghosts will stay ghosts, but magicians will cast a temporary light magic spell on them so that they can be visible to the human eye during classes. Ghost characters will also be taught this spell. Note that ghosts can be seen by Magicians nonetheless because they are made of Rukh. More on Rukh can be found on the Rukh, Magic and Magicians page.

Characters who are connected to other characters and depend on this connection for survival (e.g. Servants from fate/) are no longer bound by this, although other contracts (such as command spells like in fate/) may still be in effect if the other character is apped. They now depend on the Rukh for their survival.

Sick and dying characters will be cured upon arrival. However, they will have a weaker constitution. Characters who cannot walk will be given flying carpets to accommodate them. Regardless of whether you're a citizen or not, Magnoshutatt takes care of all magicians!

Characters with scars that have been there for a long time will not be healed, but characters with several fresh wounds (e.g. a character taken from a battle or an accident) will be immediately treated with healing magic before being enrolled in their new school.

My character is too young/old for school!

No one is too young or old for school. It doesn't matter if you're 10 or 100 - characters of all ages can and will be admitted in the academy. Characters will not age regardless of species, though.

May I app a character as a teacher?
No. When characters arrive in Magnoshutatt, they will not have sufficient magic to be a teacher so everyone starts off as a student.

what are our means of communication?
Most communication will be handled through action posts but audio posts are possible with an Eye of the Rukh.

What is the Eye of the Rukh?
Also known as the Rukh's Eye, the Eye of the Rukh is a magic tool used for communication. It takes on the form of a gem in the character's arm as seen below:
Rukh's Eye
The Rukh's Eye is the round gem.

The Rukh's Eye enables communication between anyone who has one, regardless of distance. It has both audio and video modes. However, it can only be used for one-on-one communication so network-wide posts can not be made. You also cannot leave messages so all communication would have to be done live. The Rukh's Eye cannot be taken off once it is worn.

For sending letters and items, each student has their own PO box in the Magnoshutatt Academy mailroom. The boxes are 11" x 11" x 14 ¾" - enough room for two shoeboxes and 10 to 15 letters. There are small flying carpets available for smaller magicians who can't reach their boxes. Just tell the carpet your PO box number and off you go! There is a counter where you can send items to other students and claim items that do not fit in your PO Box - there will be a claim stub in your PO Box that you can present at the counter when this happens.

Characters must have an IC inbox in their journals to receive messages from the Rukh's Eye and items in their PO Boxes.

Are there any language barriers?

Characters will all speak the same language upon arrival. It is possible to speak another language in the game. After all, there are other languages in the Magi world. However, the character will have to concentrate in order to speak their native language.

What can my character use as a wand?
If a character has owned an important object to them at one point, it will be in the character's possession upon arrival through the dungeon in Magnoshutatt Academy. This object can be used as a wand. It can be any portable object you want your character to use. A sword? Go ahead. A necklace? Sure. An umbrella? Go for it. Mundane things like a ballpen your character owns or a pair of chopsticks they just happened to be holding are not acceptable as wands. If your character doesn't have any objects important to them that can be used as wands, they will be given a standard wand by the Academy.

How long does it take my character to become proficient in magic?

In Magi, it took someone two months to get from 6th kodor to 1st, but he's a hardworking kid who previously trained under a legendary magician! Normally, one would need four months to be as proficient as a 1st kodor magician! Make sure to apply for a kodor promotion for your characters in case your character is the type who learns quickly and studies a lot. More details on the kodor system can be found on the School Life page.

What if I don't want to go to class?

After every iktiyar, students are given a stipend depending on their performance in school. This money can be used to purchase clothes, food, magic tools, etc. in the third and fourth level authorization districts. The better grades you have, the more coins you will be given. Even attending class makes a difference in your stipend, so go to school!

If your character doesn't go to class, they will not be given a stipend. Instructors will keep a close eye on them, and if push comes to shove, they will also be forced by the instructors to attend remedial classes.

What if my character wants/tries to escape?
Academy City is surrounded by a strong magical barrier that prevents anyone from entering or exiting by land or air unless you use the designated gateways. You cannot leave the city unless you have permission. Each gateway is blocked by a magical barrier that can only be dispelled by deactivating the magic tools that keep it up. Don't worry about the city walls right now - there are still district gateways to pass through. A new student can't even make it outside the second level authority district. Security is very tight in Magnoshutatt!

Can my character regain items? How does regaining things back work?
If there are events that will allow it, yes! Material items only. Characters cannot regain canon powers or abilities. Pets can be regained if they are considered not appable. Most regains will be found in a character's PO box. If the regain is bigger than that, the regain will be found in a character's room. If an item has magic, powers, abilities, etc., it will either be modified to work in the game's setting, limited or not work depending on how powerful the item is or what type of magic it possesses. Regains that are extremely powerful will most likely lose nearly all their power if not entirely. Please ask a mod if such a regain has powers if you want the regain to keep some of its power/magic.

Is my character allowed to bring their pet(s)?
Yes, but nothing larger than what can be kept in a character's room. For example, Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender may keep Momo, but not Appa. Pets can also be regained. If the pet comes in a container such as a Pokéball, the Pokéball can be found in the character's PO box. If not, all pets will be found in a character's room the next day when they wake up. Pets that have powers and abilities will have them capped/limited. Owners are also responsible for their pets and their actions - they might get into trouble with the school faculty! Up to six pets can be regained. Just remember, pets need to be cared for and probably need upkeep.

Can my character die?

Yes. When a character dies, they disperse into Rukh and return to the dungeon. After a while, they will enter Magnoshutatt through the dungeon gate again, unscathed. How long this takes will be up to the player.

APPLICATIONS

How many characters can I apply for in an application cycle?
Only one character can be applied per player in each application cycle. Currently, players can only have a maximum of two characters in the game.

Can I app more than one character from the same canon?
Yes, but the limit is two. The characters must not be close in canon, and playercest should be avoided. Characters that have frequent interactions in canon may not be apped by the same player.

Can I app a character from Magi?
Yes, but you must speak to a mod before apping anyone from Magi! After all, this is an alternate world where Magi are only the stuff of legends. Characters who previously did not have magical abilities will become magicians, while characters who are Magi will become regular magicians. Although characters renowned in the world such as Sinbad and Yamuraiha may be vaguely recognized by NPCs, they will never be called out on it by name. (e.g. instead of "You remind me of Yamuraiha," they might say, "You remind me of this legendary magician.") In addition, characters who know about Magnoshutatt’s history and secrets will not remember these upon arrival. This is to prevent infomodding.

Is this character appable?
These characters should have enough canon information and background that a personality section can be written without a majority of it being headcanon. If you are unsure, please ask if the character is appable.

Silent protagonists are appable, but please try to stick to canon personality offered and try not to use too much headcanon in your application. Unless the AU version of the character is canon, AU characters also are not allowed at this time. Characters that are considered canon OCs are also not allowed. Original characters are currently not allowed at the moment, but this may change in the future. Characters with history/memories from previous games are also not allowed.

Can I canon update my character?
Yes. Please comment to the Taken Characters page and request for a canon update. Once it has bee approved, your character will disperse into Rukh and return to the dungeon. After some time, they will arrive at the dungeon gate, updated. How long this takes is up to the player.

ACTIVITY, HIATUSES, DROPPING

What are the activity requirements?
Twenty (20) comments are required per month. Those twenty comments must come from at least two (2) different posts and two characters. Activity check is held every last Sunday of the month and players will have a week to comment on the post. Every other month a mandatory How's My Driving (HMD) post will go up. A player must comment on the HMD in order to pass activity check for that month. Commenting late is not advised and would be best to avoid.

A player is exempted from activity if a hiatus has been declared two weeks before activity check. Characters accepted in that month's application cycle are also exempted from activity check.

If a player fails activity, they have the option of taking a strike. A player must comment on the activity check post to ask for a strike or they will be not be given a strike and swept from the game. A player will keep a strike for two activity checks. If the player passes two activity checks after receiving a strike, it will be removed. If a player passes that has a strike passes one activity check but fails the second check, they will be removed from the game.

What happens if I drop my character?
As a character would when they die, they disperse into Rukh and return to the dungeon. All their regained belongings will also disappear in this manner. The belongings they acquired in Magnoshutatt proper will stay in their room or wherever they were last left. Please comment to the drop post to officially drop your character!

May I reapp a character?
Yes. Dropped characters may regenerate at the dungeon's gate. They may keep their kodor and memories of their last stay.

What happens if I go on hiatus?
You may put your character on auto-pilot or let them disperse into Rukh and return to the dungeon. They can regenerate at the dungeon's gate once your hiatus is over. Please comment to the hiatus post to officially declare a hiatus. A post on the OOC community declaring a hiatus will not be recognized as an official hiatus notice. The maximum amount of time a hiatus can last is four weeks unless a mod has given permission for an extended amount of time. Anything more than two months will be handled on a case-by-case basis by the mods.

ET CETERA

I have a problem with player. What should I do?
Contact a mod. You can e-mail us (rukhgate@gmail.com), send a private plurk to [plurk.com profile] rukhgate or contact a mod personally. If a player is making you feel uncomfortable or you need to be accommodated, please tell us.

Why isn't it the 25th yet? Because I really want to reserve already. Please do something about that!
I want to reserve too.

Why do the mods smell like cats?
Eski has a dog and this question is irrelevant.

Would you consider Cat Ladies an appable canon?
Unfortunately, Yaneskaprico and other characters from Cat Ladies are unappable at this time.

May we use the FAQ to ask additional questions?
Yes! Knock yourselves out.
